One of the major forces in flooring design is the use of natural materials. That is because people are rejecting the man-made manufactured mold of modern design in interiors, in favor of styles that connect the space to the living beauty of the natural world. While most carpeting is made up at least partially of synthetic fibers, there are choices that are entirely natural. These are prized for their rich textures, their authentic natural weave, and the fact that they are made from eco-friendly renewable resources.
The wool fiber production process consists of The Natural Elements…Sun, Rain, Grass and Sheep. No artificial ingredients needed, no artificial ingredients added. Wool carpet is the premium fiber choice for your home.
For nearly 20 years, our focus has been on truly sustainable products which benefit not only the environment, but your family's health and the overall health of your home or work space. So what exactly is Bio-Floor wool carpet?
It starts with high quality pure wool, with no added dyes, pesticides, or stain protections that can commonly be used by some wool carpet manufacturers. Bio-Floor carpets are 100% biodegradable and non toxic. The colors are derived from the wool as it is naturally grown on the sheep's back. Just as you, your family and friends have a specific color of hair, so do the sheep have unique colors based on particular breeds.
The wool yarns in Bio-Floor carpets are locked into place with a natural adhesive that is derived from the rubber tree. This adhesive is completely biodegradable and nontoxic as well. This is counter to the styrene butadiene adhesive used in all other wool carpets. Bio-Floor carpets are manufactured using British Wool, and the sheep are raised in a free range environment. They are outside in all types of weather, both harsh and pleasant. This dynamic environment causes the sheep to grow a very hardy fleece that yields the highest quality fiber for Bio-Floor carpeting. Through all the elements – durability reigns supreme.
The primary backing that is used in the manufacturing process of Bio-Floor wool carpet is also an industry first combination of hemp and cotton. The hardy hemp fiber is used because of it's durability, strength, and mold and mildew resistance. The all-natural primary backing is specifically designed to be used in Bio-Floor biodegradable flooring.
Bio-Floor wool carpeting has a "useful" life of 20 to 25 years before it needs to be replaced. Typical synthetic residential carpets will need to be replaced about every 7 years. The synthetic carpets do not wear out per se, they just "ugly" out. Meaning they are no longer aesthetically pleasing to look at. Bio-Floor carpets have a 5 year manufacturer's defect warranty.
Bio-Floor™ is 100% bio-degradable, and if taken to the landfill will decompose just as trees, brush and grass clippings do.
All Bio-Floor carpets can be dressed up in a formal application, or used in a bedroom or family room to gain the comfort that comes from the finest all natural wool available...without sacrificing style or quality. You can see all Bio-Floor carpet styles and colors in our showroom, or we can order samples for you at no charge.
One of the biggest advantages of SmartStrand is that it is eco-friendly. It is often called the "corn carpet" as 37 percent of it is made from corn glucose which replaces the typical petroleum ingredients. This is great news not only for the environment but also for your family. Fewer chemicals in the carpet mean fewer chemicals out of the carpet by way of off-gassing of VOCs. This is especially important if you have environmental sensitivities, but it really is a huge benefit for everyone. It also requires less energy to produce than its nylon counterpart, which is kind to the environment.
SmartStrand is part of the new generation of "soft fiber" carpets. These carpets are made from very fine carpet strands, giving a feel that is softer than traditional carpet fibers. Different styles will offer varying degrees of softness, of course; longer, looser piles are the softest, but even the looped styles in this collection have an amazing feel. SmartStrand Silk is the newest addition to the collection. The name says it all -- it is even softer and plusher than the original SmartStrand.
Smartstrand offers an excellent selection of styles and colors, ranging from thick plush styles in various qualities, to looped berbers and geometric cut and loop patterns. Some of the most popular styles in the collection are offered in up to 60 colors, so it is relatively easy to find the right color for your home.
SmartStrand also features a lifetime stain and soil warranty. It is amazingly stain-resistant and easy to clean with only water. Even some of a carpet's worst enemies such as red wine, mustard, bleach, and pet accidents will not harm or stain the fiber.
Due to the low cost of production compared to nylon, SmartStrand comes at a very reasonable price for the entry-level products and tops out with the higher end Smartstrand Silk styles.
P.E.T. is a new type of polyester fiber that has a long chemical name: Polyethylene Terephthalate, but still falls in the class of fibers known commonly as polyesters. The fiber is made from PET chips, some of which come from recycled plastic containers, hence the name “pop bottle carpet". This helps to keep millions of these bottles out of landfills and saves on the use of resources in the production of polyester.
Although synthetic fibers are not as ecologically-friendly as natural fibers, such as wool, polyester is one of the most eco-friendly synthetic fibers, much more so than nylon. The amount of embodied energy used to create nylon fiber is double that required to produce the same quantity of polyester fiber.
Perhaps one of the biggest draws of polyester is its inherent stain resistance. Polyester is referred to as a closed-cell fiber, which means that it does not have any open dye sites for stains to adhere to. That is not to say that it is completely stain-proof, of course.
One noted weakness of polyester is that it is not as durable as nylon carpet fiber. Historically, polyester couldn’t come close to the strength of nylon and thus was recommended for lower-traffic areas of the home. Today, however, due to many technological advancements, the gap between polyester and nylon has been drastically reduced. Because of the noted benefits above, manufacturers have been working to improve the performance of polyester, and now polyester is stronger and more durable than ever before.
Relative to nylon, polyester carries a lower cost, due to the lower cost of raw materials and production. Thus, it is a great option for budget-driven renovations, and it offers good value for the money. Polyester carpets are available in almost every price point and quality, offering a vast selection of styles.
